Amy Winehouse
English singer-songwriter Amy Jade Winehouse was found deal in her London apartment on Saturday.
Police were called to Winehouse’s apartment following reports of someone finding a deceased woman. Winehouse was reported dead at the scene.
Winehouse had suffered from battling with drug and alcohol abuse in recent years, even as she received on-going outpatient treatment at the Priory Clinic.
Winehouse rose to fame after releasing her first album, called Frank, in 2003. Her follow-up album, Back to Black, released in 2006 lead to six Grammy awards and became the third-best selling album of the 2000s.
Tributes started to echo across the internet on Twitter and other social media platforms. Winehouse’s mother, Janis Winehouse, had previously said of her daughter’s drug and alcohol abuse, “the drugs will get her if she stays on this road”.
Winehouse is credited with creating “the year of the women” in 2009 with record labels seeking female artists with a similar sound. British singer Adele said Winehouse’s success in the US helped make her and fellow British singer Duffy’s transition in to the US market “a bit smoother”.
