Apple announces iPhone 5

At its event on Wednesday, Apple launched its highly anticipated iPhone 5.

Some highlights:

  • Made entirely of glass and aluminum
  • 7.6mm thick
  • 112 grams – 20% lighter than iphone 4s
  • 4 inch display
  • 1136×640 pixels
  • 16:9 aspect ratio
  • 44% more color saturation
  • 8 hours battery life
  • Camera has lens cover and features 8MP, better low light performance
  • Uses reversible Lightning connector
  • Supports LTE
  • US pricing: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, $399 for 64GB on a two-year contract
  • iPhone 4 is available for free (8GB) with contract

Preorders start on September 14 with shipping beginning on September 21. The iPhone 5 will launch in he US, canada, UK, france, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore with 21 countries one week later.
“I don’t think the level of invention has ever been matched by any other product we’ve done” said Bob Mansfield.

The iPod nano got an update too with a 2.5″ multi-touch display. Some of the specifications:

  • 5.4mm thick – 38% thinner than previous iPod nano
  • New home screen, home button
  • 7 different colors
  • FM tuner and live pause radio
  • Supports video
  • Widescreen video
  • Bluetooth – headphones, car, etc
  • Better battery life – up to 30 hours of playback

The new iPod Touch was also announced – here are some highlights:

  • 4″ retina display – same as iPhone 5
  • Wide screen video
  • 6.1mm thick – thinnest ever
  • Up to 7 times faster – dual core processor, dual core graphics
