Elizabeth Taylor, one of the last old-fashioned movie stars of our time has died at the age of 79.
Taylor’s son, Michael Wilding, said in a statement: “We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”
Elton John, long-time friend, said “We have just lost a Hollywood giant… More importantly, we have lost an incredible human being.”
By some termed the most blessed and cursed of actresses, Taylor won two Academy Awards for her more than 50 movies, as well as one for her humanitarian work. Her beauty and grace was extraordinary and she is said to have been the most loyal of friends.
But Taylor was also affected by ill health and personal tragedy, and a number of failed romances – eight marriages and seven husbands.
Publicist Sally Morrison said Taylor passed away on Wednesday from congestive heart failure surrounded by her four children at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she had been hospitalised for the last six weeks.
