The announcement was made by Clarence House on Saturday after Prince William and Catherine left Buckingham Palace by helicopter for an undisclosed location for the UK bank holiday weekend.
It is expected they will travel to the Queen’s Balmoral Estate in Scotland, which will allow them privacy and a beautiful countryside in which to unwind.
Officials said the couple’s “personal preference” was to have the break at another time and called on the media to respect their privacy following Friday’s spectacular royal wedding.
The secrecy surrounding the couple’s honeymoon destination has led to intense speculation in the media. Australia’s Lizard Island has emerged as a contender but they have plenty of options including Africa, Jordan and the Caribbean.
No matter what they decide, the honeymoon will be a litmus test of the married couple’s relationship with the insatiable UK press.
William has been afforded a degree of privacy in the past by the media and is determined his new wife won’t be hounded like his mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales.
