Cavendish wins 15th stage of Tour de France

Mark Cavendish won stage 15 of the 2011 Tour de France on Saturday, his fourth stage win this year.

Cavendish won by a narrow margin over Tyler Farrar, bringing Cavendish’s total career stage wins to 19. Cavendish’s team-mate Mark Renshaw helped Cavendish to the final 200m leading to the half-bike-length win.

The 15th stage, 193km long, was mostly flat and features one short category four climb. The overall standings remain unchanged from yesterday’s standings.

In other news Alexandre Vinokourov announced his retirement from cycling a week after breaking his right leg, earlier in the race, in a stage 9 crash. No riders withdrew from the race today.

The leaders in the various standings are as follows:

  • Overall: Thomas Voekler of France at 65h 24min 34sec
  • Points: Mark Cavendish with 319 points
  • King of the Mountains: Jelle Vanendert with 74pts
  • Team: Team Leopard-Treck with 195h 47min 43sec
  • Youth: Rigoberto Uran with 65h 32min 29sec
