Oz The Great and Powerful opened with box office receipts totaling just over US$79 million this past weekend.
‘Oz’ largest viewership were women at 52% of audiences, followed by families at 41%. In 3,192 US theaters 53% of viewers enjoyed Oz The Great and Powerful in 3D, with 10% of those viewing the film in IMAX.
The weekend’s top 12 films brought in just over US$128 million – an increase of 6% over the same time last year. At the same time last year, Alice In Wonderland opened its first weekend with receipts of US$116.1 million.
The weekend’s second place goes to Jack the Giant Slayer which pulled in US$9.8 million – a fall of 64% compared to the previous weekend. Identity Thief is in third place at US$6.3 million.
The film has generally received favourable reviews of approximately 6 out of 10 points. Most reviewers enthusiastically commented on the film’s visual effects and clever comedy, yet a number of reviewers said the film was inconsistent in terms of overall delivery.
Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, stars James Franco as the Wizard of Oz, Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Rachel Weisz as the Wicked Witch of the East.
