The former Beatles musician popped the question to the American businesswoman nearly four years after they first met in The Hamptons area of New York State during the summer of 2007.

It will be the 68-year-old music legend’s third marriage.

 

His first wife, Linda, died from breast cancer in 1998 and he then wed ex-model Heather Mills in 2002 before divorcing her in 2008.

“We’re all thrilled for him,” McCartney’s spokesman Stuart Bell said, confirming the engagement but giving no further details.

A friend of the couple said: “They have the right chemistry. They’re both cool, chilled out and optimistic.”

The couple has remained tight-lipped about their relationship, although in December last year it was said they were making secret preparations to marry

Shevell, who has been dating the Beatles legend for nearly four years, is heiress to her father’s company New England Motor Freight, where she works as vice-president of administration.

The 51-year-old businesswoman is also said to have been a big hit with the singer’s five children, Heather, 48, Mary, 41, Stella, 39, James, 33, and Beatrice, seven.
