Alex Fevola said her ex-husband’s former clubs, the media and footy fans turned a blind eye to his drinking, gambling and womanising because of his on-field exploits.
“The media, the football clubs, the management, everybody has to take some sort of blame for creating this monster,” she told the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program.
“I would always just wish the attention levels would calm down. I know that is a lot to do with what happened with Brendan, his ego just went through the roof and when you’re a young boy who really isn’t equipped to deal with that it has adverse affects.”
Fevola has been involved in a string of alcohol-fuelled controversies in his time at Carlton and Brisbane, including a drunken night at the 2009 Brownlow Medal.
Brisbane sacked Fevola in March following a drinking spree on New Year’s Eve.
The fallen star admits he faces an uphill battle to return to the AFL in 2012, but says “you can never say never”.
“My chances at the moment are zero of getting drafted (to the AFL).”
“Everyone knows I can play footy, everyone knows I can kick goals; it’s what I do off the field that’s going to maybe get me drafted.”
